What is your Wheel story?
What started out as a fun trip out to the Wheel Mobile Event in Nashville, TN ended up with BOTH Philip and I making it onto the show, not as individual contestants, but as Sweethearts! We’ve always been meant to be together (it took us 8 years of friendship before we ever went on a date). And now Wheel of Fortune contestant coordinators also saw that we are BETTER TOGETHER! Funny how God sometimes just takes you in a direction that you were always destined for, even when you don’t see it at the time. (Laura Beth)
Were there any special highlights of your game? Specific puzzles you solved or didn't solve?
Speaking of things that were hard to see at the time…the prize puzzle was mostly populated by the contestants that jumped on the “Express Train” but they went Bankrupt after calling a letter that wasn’t there. One more contestant team called a letter that wasn’t there and in what seemed like an obvious conclusion to the puzzle (only 2 letters left) was not clear to any of the 3 teams! We spun the wheel and I felt like I should call a P or a G. I uttered “P” and after what felt like an eternal pause from Pat, he said, there is 1 “P.” We still didn’t know the puzzle! And only one letter left! No vowels left. My husband spun the wheel, prayed “God what letter do I call?” and the letter “B” popped into his head. I looked at him in a panic when it was time to call a letter, and he said to me, “B” it’s gotta be “Superb” and SUPERB it was! A SUPERB VACATION RESORT!
So for Philip’s 40th Birthday we are headed to Hawaii! (Laura Beth)
Were you nervous when you taped your episode?
Yes! And I stayed nervous until we walked out of the building on our way back to our hotel! During our rehearsal where we played a round including introducing ourselves, spinning the wheel and calling letters to actually solve a puzzle, I bought a vowel and there were no vowels even left in the puzzle. Oh no, I thought, I’m one of those players. (Laura Beth)
We were the first taping of the day. So right after rehearsal we were up. Touch up to our make up, getting our microphones set and practicing enunciation. Quick bathroom break, brush teeth and I was about to pass out, I’m going on TV, I am about to solve puzzles while Vanna White is at the letter board! I started singing this spiritual song I always sing to my son to get him to sleep. When there’s nothing else to do, just sing a worship song! And that’s what we did from the contestant room to our place at the wheel. (Philip)
Did Pat Sajak help put you at ease?
All was going great during the game for us…I felt comfortable, I forgot the crowd was there, and I was focused on the game and spinning the wheel. Then I heard Pat Sajak say, “This round is Phrase, Philip your spin.” I will never forget reaching down and catching eyes with Pat and thinking, “He said my name!” I remember my grandmother watching this show and how I would love to tell her this story. (Philip)
Pat Sajak is truly a gifted host! He’s got the quick wit, and he is definitely FOR every contestant on that stage! He spoke so positively to each of us, even giving us a “clue” before the prize puzzle round. He looked down at his set of cards he always holds and told, us “It’s a really nice prize.” We miss having Pat as our weatherman in Nashville, but he’s clearly made for a different role. (Laura Beth)
I am sure many people have asked, but he does have the BEST job in the world, and I would like to apply. (Philip)
He’s serious. (Laura Beth)
What was the hardest part?
Waiting to see the show air from the time we taped felt like a long time. Also, having some regret of what you could of called and should have seen. But you have to keep in mind what Pat says, “Sometimes the Wheel just doesn’t play in your direction or if the letters aren’t there, they aren’t there.” You have to go in enjoying the entire journey! (Philip)
I can’t believe I didn’t get “Red Red Wine” (Song Lyric / Toss Up #3). I love 80’s music! So, that one hurt. But to see that all 3 teams went home with good winnings is yet another reason that I love Wheel of Fortune above any other game show out there. (Laura Beth)
What was the best part?
We loved the entire experience. The staff, crew and contestant coordinators were always encouraging, and very helpful. From the time we were at the Wheel Mobile auditions to the last time we were getting coached before going to the Bonus Round, we felt set up for success. The Contestant Coordinators are our favorites! (Philip)
I agree with Philip, but winning Wheel of Fortune felt pretty great too! (Laura Beth)
