Laurie and Brian 's Blog Post
Brian and I both grew up watching Wheel of Fortune at the dinner table every night throughout our childhoods. We’ve carried on the tradition by watching the show with our kids every night as well. It quickly became our oldest son’s favorite show. In fact, asking us to turn on Wheel of Fortune was one of the first things he was able to communicate with us!
When our oldest son was five, he began asking how people became contestants on the show. After a quick internet search, I found out how to apply by submitting a short video online. Our son immediately picked up my phone and recorded his own application video, and then asked me to do the same. I spent about 20 seconds making a video, and a couple minutes submitting it online. I never expected to hear back from anyone.
Low and behold, I received an email from Wheel of Fortune a couple months later! I was invited to an audition and discovered they were looking for married couples with children. Brian and I were excited to take a little road trip for the audition, but again, we were not actually expecting to get on the show. Within a couple weeks of the audition, I was contacted with a taping date for our show! We decided to take advantage of the opportunity and bring our kids to Disneyland for the first time! We were extremely blessed to have our parents come along for the adventure as well.
Seeing the stage, getting to spin the wheel, and meeting Pat and Vanna were such a thrill! But the real fun started when it was our turn to play. Brian and I solved the first puzzle which was a Star-Wars themed crossword puzzle. We felt great after winning the first round, and I think it made us more relaxed for the rest of the show. We went on to solve the next puzzle “spotting double rainbows” as well.
Next up was the prize puzzle. As the puzzle proceeded, we figured it out very quickly. However, we didn’t think we would have a shot at solving it since the puzzle started with the couple farthest away from us. The other teams called a consonant and a vowel that were not in the puzzle, and the game returned to us. I could hardly contain my excitement as we solved the prize puzzle, “absolutely unforgettable”! We were ecstatic to win a family trip to Disney World, especially since our son got sick while we were in California and only got to spend one day at Disney.
After the prize puzzle, Brian and I won the last toss-up “scrapbooking”, and ended up with over $20,000 in cash and prizes! Just getting to the bonus round was a huge accomplishment and we were thrilled to be there. Our moms were in the audience, and we couldn’t be happier to get to introduce them.
Brian and I chose “living things” as our bonus round category. I figured out the last two words of the puzzle as soon as the letters came up. Before I even had a chance to think about what the first word could be, Brian told me he knew the puzzle. I held my breath as the timer started and Brian blurted out “doves and owls”, which was correct! Pat opened the envelope to reveal another $36,000 to add to our total! Our moms rushed onto the stage with open-arms and tears in their eyes. This was undoubtedly one of the most thrilling and fantastic moments of my life!
Our Wheel of Fortune experience was incredible from start to finish! Everyone we came in contact with throughout the whole process was wonderful. I never dreamed I would be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune, but it was the most fun and exciting thing I’ve ever done! I highly recommend anyone who is interested to apply for the show. You just might be chosen to make your own “absolutely unforgettable” Wheel of Fortune experience!
