What is my “Wheel experience”? First off, let me start by saying that it took me two tries to make it onto the show, so If there is anyone out there who wants to “check this off their bucket list”, don’t give up! My first audition was about 5 years ago. I auditioned on stage at a nearby Wheelmobile event, and a few months later, I got a call back for a second audition! I was so excited, and it went really well, until the dreaded timed test! Needless to say, I bombed it, and I went home that day knowing that I was not going to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune, or so I thought… Little did I know, but God was planning something incredible!
Fast forward about 5 years, and a lot has changed! I still loved watching the show, but now I was getting to watch them with my husband! Since my last audition, I had met the man of my dreams, and now I had introduced him to the show. He is very competitive, so it was extra fun beating him at the puzzles! (There’s not much I can beat him at, so I relished these small victories.) One night, as we were playing, he gave me his phone (with the Wheel of Fortune audition form already pulled up), and said, “You’ve got to apply! You’re too good not to try again!” I was hesitant, but I went ahead and applied anyways. (Had it not been for his encouragement, I don’t think I would have ever tried out again.)
Fast forward a few weeks, and I had received an email inviting me to an audition in Louisville, Kentucky. I live in Tennessee, but the audition date was the EXACT day that me and my family were traveling to Chicago, so I was already going to be passing through Kentucky anyways! (God’s timing is always perfect!) To make a long story short, I did much better on the timed test, but I was still unsure if I had impressed them enough to make it onto the show.
Fast forward about two weeks later, and I get THE email! I don’t believe it, but I get the email saying I’ve been chosen as a contestant, AND they already had a date picked out for me! It was going to be in TWO weeks! (Remember earlier when I said God’s timing is always perfect?) The date for my taping was my husband’s birthday! The one who encouraged me to try out again! My best friend! We were going to get to go to California, meet Pat and Vanna, and have this once in a lifetime experience on HIS birthday!
Two weeks later, my husband, my parents, and I boarded a plane for California. When I arrived at Sony studio, I was blown away at how welcoming EVERYONE was to all of us contestants! We went over lots of things, and we had some practice time at the wheel. (By the way, that thing is heavy! Did you know it weighs 2,400 pounds?) We were taping 6 shows and mine was going to be the third show! As I watched the two shows before me, I began to get EXTRA nervous. (Actually, to be honest, I had been very nervous ever since receiving the email telling me about my taping date, two weeks prior!) However, right before I went on for my show, I remembered how God was with me throughout this whole process, and I knew He would be with me at the Wheel too! Whether I was to win or lose, He was with me, and I had nothing to worry about. Immediately, and for the first time in two, long weeks, my nerves were GONE. Let’s do this!
Fast forward to the end of the game, I had a BLAST! I had won cash, a trip to Boston, AND I was going to get to go to the Bonus Round! I couldn’t believe it! I was going to get to introduce my husband and parents on national tv to Pat Sajak! That is a prize, in and of itself! Pat was wonderful! When I met him down at the Bonus Wheel, he told me, “You’re already a winner, so remember that! This part is just for fun!” He was right! I had already been blessed with so much already! Win or lose I had already had the time of my life! But wait… it was about to get EVEN better...The next thing I know, I had solved the puzzle, and won a car! My family raced over to me, and that was, BY FAR, my favorite gift. Having my husband and parents there with me, sharing in that special, once in a lifetime moment, was priceless, and I will never forget it. We left there on cloud 9… Now, here’s where God’s timing and plan comes into play yet AGAIN! When we got home to Tennessee, my old car WOULDN’T START! I’m not kidding! I got in it to leave for work, and it wouldn’t start! Come to find out, it was going to need “some work”, BUT, for the first time, we didn’t have to worry about “fixing” it, because God had already provided a NEW car for us! What a blessing, and what a blessing this whole experience was. Wish I could do it again!
