Being on Wheel of Fortune was a dream come true for me! Ever since I was a little girl, I had watch the show and hoped that I might someday be on it. So when I heard that the Wheelmobile was coming to Charlotte, I just had to go, even though I couldn’t convince anyone to come with me. Undeterred I drove down there by myself and was fortunate enough for my name to be drawn. I left that day not knowing if I would receive a call back but so happy that I had given it a shot. Fortunately I was invited back to the final audition a few months later. My husband came with me and we auditioned together. Shortly thereafter we received a wonderful letter in the mail telling us we had been selected as contestants! Although they said it could take up to 18 months for us to be on the show, we only had to wait a few weeks until we got the call to come out to California.
The night before our taping, I could barely sleep. We arrived at the studio early in the morning and were greeted by the wonderful producers and staff. Everyone was so kind and attentive, which made the experience that much more enjoyable. After a few hours of paperwork, hair, makeup, and rehearsal, it was time for the real thing. Our group was the last group of the day, so we got to watch the other four shows being taped. When it was finally our turn, it was so surreal to be on that stage next to Pat Sajak! I could barely believe it when we solved the first Toss-Up, then the second, and the third! The most incredible moment was solving the prize puzzle and learning that we had won a $14,000 cruise on the Danube River from Disney Adventures!
We made it to the Bonus Round, nervous and still reeling from all we had won so far. Fortunately my husband called an O, and the solution to the puzzle became clear to us. When he said “FAR FROM OVER,” the realization we had won set in. We were overjoyed, and we hadn’t even found out what we’d won yet! When Pat opened the envelope and we saw the $34,000, it was a moment we’ll never forget! WE HAD ACTUALLY WON “WHEEL OF FORTUNE”!
Coming back to North Carolina, we now faced the arduous task of keeping our good news a secret. We had only told our immediate family that we were going to be on the show, so none of our friends knew. Telling people you’re going to be on Wheel is almost as fun as actually being on the show – almost! Everyone was thrilled when we told them. We celebrated with a viewing party for about 75 of our family and friends. We challenged them to solve the puzzles before the contestants on the show, and gave out prizes to the winners. At the end of the night, we gave a small cash prize to the person who came closest to predicting how much we won on the show. It was so much fun and everyone was thrilled for us.
Now we look forward to using our winnings to pay off our kitchen renovation as well as a few other things. And we can’t wait to celebrate our 20th anniversary floating down the Danube together! Thank you, Wheel of Fortune, for making it all happen!
