Wheel of Fortune is MY HAPPY PLACE!
I always wanted to be Wheel of Fortune ever since I moved to Las Vegas from Rochester, NY after I got honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1982 – the same Vanna White debuted on the show. It was a game show I could do well on, as I played a lot of hangman in my childhood and did pretty good and my friends always say to me – “you’re so lucky”, and you have a little luck with that Wheel, too. When I came back from the taping and my friends asked me how I did I said, “What happens on Wheel of Fortune stays on Wheel of Fortune, until it airs.”
I always wanted to personally meeting the witty Pat Sajak and sexy Vanna White – What a team!
I’ve been going to the Wheelmobile stops in Las Vegas for at least 25 years. When they were at a grand opening on new homes, Las Vegas Hilton, Venetian Hotel & Casino and Green Valley Ranch Casino I was there! I did get called 20 years ago at a Wheelmobile event, but in March 2015 at the Green Valley Ranch event I was the second to last name to be called. I let out a “Whoop!”, threw my large St. Patrick’s Day hat in the air and ran up on stage. I Wheel-y wanted to be on Wheel of Fortune!
I wrote a poem many years ago:
I want to buy a vowel and pick a letter,
Life would be so much better
If I could spin that Wheel round and round
Stop on a Mill, oh what a thrill!
It would be to meet Pat Sajak and Vanna White
Then everything would be all right!
And it was!
Being on Wheel of Fortune was like being on cloud nine! I was nervous but I had fun! It was such a compliment when Pat called me a hoot! That’s me! I love acting goofy and making people laugh! One of the puzzles I solved, THE STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER, is a knock, knock joke I tell:
- Knock, knock.
- Who’s there?
- Tarzan who?
- TARZAN STRIPES FOREVER!
And a Toss-Up that I solved is another joke:
- Who invented macaroni?
- Someone who used their noodle!
When I picked up the Wild Card, it said ‘Wild’, so I wanted to do what it said!
I always said to myself if I’m ever blessed enough to be on Wheel of Fortune and go to the Bonus Round and solve the puzzle I am going to go nuts! I’ve seen contestants win cars, gift cards, trips and thousands of dollars in cash and they just smile and clap. Not me! I’m on national TV’s #1 game show in the world, I got to meet Pat Sajak and Vanna White and just won thousands of dollars – this doesn’t happen to a lot of people. I’m going to make the most of it and let all of my emotions out!
When I was in the Bonus Round I assumed it was MY HAPPY PLACE and called the M, Y, D and A and they were almost all in it. I’ve prayed many years for this opportunity. My prayers were answered!
My favorite parts of my Wheel of Fortune experience is the wonderful feeling you get knowing they picked you to be on Wheel of Fortune, getting to meet the greatest game show hosts, being treated like royalty (like kings and queens) by the Wheel staff - Shannon, Alex, Jackie and Teddy, AND meeting other Veteran contestants from all over America!
I believe what goes around comes around (like the Wheel on Wheel of Fortune) in life. What you give from your heart comes back tenfold. I’ve been in many contests and drawings in my life and won quite a few. When the Wheel of Fortune slot machines debuted in Las Vegas in 1997 I won a Wheel of Fortune jean jacket in a drawing at Boulder Station Casino. Was that a premonition? I started collecting Wheel of Fortune memorabilia after that!
I love competing and the feeling you get when you win but being on Wheel of Fortune and meeting Pat and Vanna and all of the wonderful people that work for Sony Pictures who made all of us feel important is the best feeling in the world – next to serving my country! You should try both!
P.S. And my offer still stands Pat Sajak! (I’ll take care of you for FREE!)
