What an amazing experience!!!! We arrived in LA the night before the show, and on the way to the hotel, we did a trial run to Sony Studios to make sure that we knew exactly where we needed to be in the wee early morning hours. Believe it or not, we did not get much sleep that night. The excitement and nerves were building already.
In the morning, we were in the parking lot at 6:25 am. An employee of Wheel of Fortune was waiting for us in the parking lot, and shortly thereafter, when more of the contestants arrived, took us up to Sony Studios. We were brought directly into the area where the audience sits and that is when we took our first look at the set of the Wheel of Fortune. It was so surreal seeing the wheel, letter board, cameras, lights, the Mini Cooper, and the beach scene set for the Sandals Resort Romance Week.
We could see how each staff member we met had so much pride for their job: the contestant coordinators training and prepping us; the make-up and hair style artists getting us ready for TV; and even the employees making sure that the floor of the set shined brighter than we have ever seen a floor shine before.
We were kept busy from the moment we arrived. Each of us went through moments of severe nerves and intense enthusiasm. Vanna came into a room where we were being prepped to greet us before she went for hair and make-up. Without all that, she is still so beautiful. She cheered us on, gave us a pep talk, and wished us all good luck.
After that, our team of three couples drew the 1st show that was being filmed that day, which gave us no time to watch others play the game and see what types of puzzles were chosen for the shows.
During the rehearsal, where we actually played the game, there were answers that we guessed wrong, or should I say, one of us guessed wrong, which really seemed to bring the nerves to a new level. Now it was time to go back for make-up and hair one more time, put on the mics, get the final instructions and off we went.
We took our places behind the wheel. Lights, Camera, Action! Pat and Vanna walked on the set and took their place with the audience cheering. My husband and I were going to have the strategy of taking turns of spinning the wheel, but after the 1st game or two, I decided to let him take over the spinning since the wheel was so heavy, and I really needed to find a way to focus on the game. After the 1st toss-up when Pat was talking with us, we were lucky if our names came out right when we introduced ourselves.
The 2nd toss-up came and we solved it. We jumped up and hugged each other since we were just so excited that we solved a puzzle. Then the luck of the wheel was with us as we solved the 1st and 2nd word puzzles. We won the wild card during one of the puzzles, but during the 3rd word puzzle, we hit bankrupt and didn't get the opportunity to use it. We also hit the mystery wedge after it was already used, and of course, I told Pat that we would take a chance. I was brought back to reality and informed it was already used. There is so much going on, in a good way, that it's hard to keep track of everything.
When all was said and done, we went home with $11,600 in cash and prizes and had the most wonderful time of our lives. This couldn't have come at a better time since our daughter and her fiancé will be married later this year. Our winnings will certainly help with that.
We want to thank everyone from the Wheel of Fortune Cast and Crew for taking us on this amazing journey!
